Professional background
Dr Sam Houston completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland, following earlier studies in psychology and mathematical statistics. He completed his psychiatric training across Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH), Children's Health Queensland and Belmont Private Hospital, with rotations spanning general adult psychiatry, consultation-liaison, the inpatient eating disorders unit, the vulnerable women's inpatient unit, and a mixture of community and inpatient child and youth mental health services.
Dr Houston has a strong interest in trauma informed care and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, having worked as a DBT skills facilitator accumulating several hundred hours running DBT groups for patients with borderline personality disorder at RBWH, Nundah Community Clinic, Jacaranda Place and Belmont Private Hospital.
Dr Houston is particularly drawn to the psychotherapeutic side of psychiatry, and believes medication is usually most effective when paired with active psychological treatment, healthy lifestyle habits, and attention to the broader circumstances of a person's life, rather than used on its own. He enjoys working alongside patients as they build momentum in their recovery, whether through DBT, trauma informed approaches, or longer term individual therapy.
Dr Houston is happy to review referrals for patients aged 13 to 60.
