About Circle of Security Parenting Program

The Circle of Security Parenting program (COS) is an 8-week program that alternates between Monday mornings from 9.15am – 12.30pm and Monday evenings from 6.15pm – 9.30pm. The COS program is a way of thinking about children that enables parents to look beyond the children’s immediate behaviour and think about how to meet their relationship and emotional needs.

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You are struggling to manage day-to-day tasks including parenting.
  • You are feeling depressed or anxious about your parenting experience.
  • You would like to understand your own and your child's emotions.
  • You would like to understand why the way you were parented is impacting on your parenting experience.
  • You would like to manage your own and your child's emotions in a more positive way.

What you will experience

You will participate in group sessions lead by a Circle of Security facilitator. You will learn to understand and interact with their child’s moods and behaviour. Based on more than 40 years of research COS focuses on the relationships that provide children with emotional support. Using a gentle pace, the program helps parents to fully discover and understand how to interact with their children in a more positive and healthy manner.

To access this program, we need a valid referral from a medical practitioner to a psychiatrist with admission rights to Belmont Private Hospital. You can contact the Brisbane Centre of Postnatal Disorders directly on 07 3398 0238 or 07 3258 5780.

Who will find this program helpful?

Circle of Security is suitable for parents with children of all ages. COS trained parents reported being more confident in responding to their child's needs, felt better able to cope as a parent, felt closer to their child and acquired more understanding of their child's attachment and exploration needs.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

The program is conducted over 8 weeks. Participants attend sessions on Monday mornings or Monday evenings. The COS program is conducted continually throughout the year.

How much does it cost?

Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. Please confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Belmont Private Hospital by calling 07 3398 0111 or 3398 0238.
