About Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for Mothers

There are 2 components: 

  1. CBT in which you will learn to identify and manage irrational thinking styles which inhibit healthy functioning so you can make a positive change and enhance your life. 
  2. Parenting Education— Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) taught in weeks 5 & 6. Triple P aims to prevent children’s behavioural problems by providing skills and confidence

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You are feeling depressed or anxious during your pregnancy or as a new mother.
  • You are feeling disconnected from your baby.
  • You are struggling to manage day-to-day tasks you once easily managed.
  • You seem to be stuck in the way you feel and would love to learn how to get out of this cycle.
  • You are irritable at your partner or family members a lot of the time.

What you will experience

Throughout this program you will participate in group sessions lead by a qualified Allied Health Professional. You will be supported to learn practical skills and strategies that teach the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. You will experience the feeling of connection and normality by meeting other new mothers who are also experiencing a perinatal mood disorder.

Treatment objectives

Objective 1

Understanding perinatal mood disorders. Learn about the contributing factors and signs and symptoms of the illness.

Objective 2

Understand and Manage Anxiety. Learn to understand what anxiety is and a variety of techniques that can be used to manage anxiety.

Objective 3

Challenge and manage unhelpful thinking. Learn about unhelpful thought patterns that everyone experiences and how to change them.

Objective 4

Begin living a Values Focussed Life. Identify and use your values to create a rich full and meaningful life.

Objective 5

Understanding Perfectionism. Discover if perfectionism is impacting on your life and how to make change.

Objective 6

Understand and Manage Guilt and Anger. Learn how these emotions are impacting on your life and how to change them.

For you to access this program, we need a valid referral from a medical practitioner to a psychiatrist with admission rights to Belmont Private Hospital.

Who will find this program helpful?

Women who are experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties through pregnancy or after the birth of their child.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

The program is conducted over 6 weeks. Participants attend sessions every Tuesday and Friday from 9:15am to 3:00pm. Morning tea and lunch is provided. It is preferable to commence the program at the start of each cycle. The program is conducted continually throughout the year .

How much does it cost?

Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. Please confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Belmont Private Hospital by calling 07 3398 0111 or 3398 0238..
