About Creative Therapies for Older Adults

The Creative Therapies for Older Adults is a 12-week program designed for individuals over 50. Expressive arts are used to explore difficult emotions, ideas and experiences of life. Art materials offer participants a visual tool of communication and expression that can be explored, shared and witnessed within the creative community. 

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • Are interested in alternative therapies to support memory, resilience, flexible thinking and general well being.
  • Are over 50 and interested in creative processes, techniques and creative expression.
  • Are open to connecting with others through creative processes.
  • Open to mindful art making processes to regulate emotions and reduce overthinking and feelings of anxiety.
  • Experience low mood and feelings of isolation.

Program content

Each week, members explore expressive arts individually and within a group. Modalities include, drawing, painting, collage, guided imagery, mindfulness, mosaics, murals, eco art, abstract art, group creations, motivation/guidance, song sharing, interactive games and reflection. Themes covered include, sensory exploration, inner child, patterns (past and future), mindful melodies, gratitude, art and artists, clay connections, positivity in thread, me and myself, outside the line and farewell.  

What you will experience

Each week group members are invited to investigate & reflect on topics and process through their art making. The creative environment encourages discussion & art experimentation. Expressing oneself with art and connecting to different art mediums can be a mindful, sensory & therapeutic process that encourages fine motor skills and memory recall. Participants are encouraged to use art as a tool of connection and communication to enhance belonging.

Who will find this program helpful?

Individuals over 50, who are interested in creative processes, techniques and creative expression. You do not need to have any skills in art to participate in this program, just a willingness to try and experiment.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

The program is designed to be completed within 12 weeks. Participants attend sessions every Tuesday from 9:15am to 3:00pm. Morning tea and lunch is provided.

How much does it cost?

Patients are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Belmont Private Hospital by calling 07 3398 0111.
