About DBT for Young Adults Program

This program runs for 12 weeks (one half-day session per week) and is designed for Young Adults between the ages of 15 and 25 years old. It aims to introduce the four modules of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. The program aims to increase skilfulness for managing emotions and building more effective coping strategies and healthier relationships.
 

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You would like to work on decreasing impulsive, destructive urges.
  • You are a young person between the ages of 15 and 25 and you struggle with mindfulness.
  • You find it difficult to tolerate distress.
  • You find it difficult to regulate your emotions. .
  • You find it difficult to maintain healthy relationships and boundaries.

What you will experience

In DBT-YA, you will participate in group sessions lead by qualified Allied Health Professionals. You will be supported to learn practical skills to increase mindfulness; learn crisis survival skills to tolerate stress and distress; understand and regulate emotions and improve interpersonal effectiveness. You will practice applying skills both within the session and between-sessions.

Treatment objectives

Objective 1

Understanding Mindfulness – learn to be self-aware and in the present moment.

Objective 2

Distress Tolerance – learn and develop skills to manage your emotions rather than using harmful behaviours when in emotional crisis.

Objective 3

Emotional Regulation – gain a better understanding of emotions and learn skills to recognise them and respond effectively.

Objective 4

Interpersonal Effectiveness – learn key communication skills to strengthen current relationships and build new ones. You will learn to establish healthy boundaries while respecting your needs and the needs of others.

Who will find this program helpful?

This program may be useful for Young Adults diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or who have intense and unstable mood states or difficulties with relationships.

How much does it cost?

Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Belmont Therapy Programs by calling 07 3398 0270.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

This treatment is run on a weekly basis for 12-weeks on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. Participants will attend one session per week from 12:45pm to 4:00pm. The program can be started at the beginning of any module (every four weeks) depending on waitlist requirements. Afternoon tea is provided.
