Be Medicinewise Week 2019

The ninth annual Be Medicinewise Week encourages Australians to get to know the language of medicines. Are you medicine wise?

Understanding and communicating about medicines is key to getting the most out of them, safely.

Medicines are part of most people’s lives, and getting to know ‘the language of medicines’ and asking the right questions is a critical component to your individual treatment and care.

How can you learn the language of medicines?
1. KNOW
all the medicines you take and why you take them. Keeping an up-to-date medication list a great way to stay on top of your medicines.

2. UNDERSTAND the instructions for taking your medicines. Medicines only work if you are taking them properly, and you can only take them properly if you understand the instructions.

3. CHECK with your health professional before starting any new medication. A health professional can help you balance the benefits of a medicine with any potential risks and side effects.

4. ASK questions if there is anything you don’t understand about your medication. Seeking information from a trusted source can help you get the most out of your medications, safely.

Not sure what to ask? Here’s our top 5 questions to ask your Doctor to help you get the most out of your medicines:
1. Do I really need this test, treatment or procedure?
2. What are the risks?
3. Are there simpler, safer options?
4. What happens if I don’t do anything?
5. What are the costs?
